SNL has its first black head writer, Michael Che

NBC announced a shuffle yesterday which saw weekend update star Michael Che promoted to the head writer position at Saturday Night Live. He’s the first black person to hold the position in the 43 year history of the show, which is surprising given the liberal nature of the show. Colin Jost who is Che’s partner on Weekend Update (and also currently dating Scarlett Johansson) was named co-head writer. Prior to joining the cast of SNL in 2013 Che was a correspondent on ‘The Daily Show’. Michael Che is wickedly funny and all you need do is watch any of his stand up specials to see how smart and current he really is with a little breathing room outside of the confines of quick ‘Update’ segment. He’s been on Rolling Stone’s ’50 Funniest People’, Buzzfeed’s ’50 Hottest Men in Comedy’ and Variety’s ‘Top 10 Comics to Watch’ and hopefully will helm the show to further success riding a ratings and relevancy high into 2018.
