This Smashing Pumpkins reunion has heated up quickly over the last month but the mystery of who will be playing bass lingers on despite the fact that the band is in the studio right now. Last month pictures leaked of Billy Corgan in studio with original guitarist James Iha and original drummer Jimmy Chamberlain. Shortly after original bassist D’Arcy Wretsky revealed that she wouldn’t be part of the reunion. Collaborator Jeff Schroeder was rumoured to be filling her place but Corgan shot those rumours down. Now that more photo’s from their studio sessions are surfacing we can see mixing desk albels with Corgan, Iha and Shroeder all on guitar with another pot labelled simply ‘Bass’.
The mystery continues. The good news is that they may be wrapped on recording the new album after one photo shared by Billy Corgan showed that Chamberlain’s drum kit had been dismantled, speaking of approaching the final stages. Apparently Corgan sang five songs in one day. No bassist but legend Rick Rubin is producing the album, which apparently has ‘over 26 songs in various states of completion, production, insanity’. Fans are speculating that this could lead to yet another double record akin to ‘Mellon Collie And The Inifinite Sadness’. Who knows, Rick Rubin has been known to help a band return to form like he did with Metallica and Black Sabbath. Maybe the Pumpkins are next!
Photos from the studio
Ok, so today is absolutely, officially the last day of studio work (only two days off since I got here to LaLa), and it will be a fun one as we are recording live strings for a few songs I’ve done the arrangements for. The pic here is of me at an M400 Mellotron (think the opening of Strawberry Fields and you get the picture) taken by none other than @lindastrawberry #mellotron #wpc
A pic of the post-drum apocalypse. Sang 5 songs today with a bit of a croak in throat, as this bug persists. But got some lyric fixes in, did some string arranging on 2 songs via an M400 #mellotron, and am set to finish up the work tomorrow. With live strings on Wednesday. Go-go-go… #wpc @chamberdrums
