Even one of Donald Trump’s fiercest critics had to admit defeat on Sunday, CNN headline “Mueller report did not find Trump or his campaign conspired with Russia” said it all. Russia-gate is done. Decision by knockout. The connections drawn between Trump and Russia on the surface were convincing and the media spin made those connections look iron-clad. Sure, maybe it’s true but it’s definitely not provable and after this fiasco will forever be labeled ‘fake news’.
You can go down a list of events like, say, Helsinki to infer suspicious activity and you can draw lines between his behavior and policies towards Russia but now these are just ‘bigfoot’ sightings. Now the world just has to settle with the fact that America elected a perverted reality show host as their commander and chief and the political opposition had no come-back other than trying to pin the whole thing on Russia. Good old Russia, always there for Hollywood when they run out of new villains to create.
Intelligence agency’s do agree, however, that Russia is not a friendly international actor and we do know that they influenced the 2016 US election using a brand of social media info-ops. It’s ‘classic’ Russia really, who are experts at info-ops (which is a nice name for modern day propaganda) but in the end it was the American people who went into the voting booths and put an X next to Donald Trump’s name even if it was Russia who helped stoke the social media fire.
There already had been a growing suspicion or distrust of the ‘Mainstream Media’ or the ‘Liberal Media’, terminology and seeds sewn by the President himself even before his election. How could major, established, publications like the New York Times, Washington Post, CNN all get this wrong? Even more concerning is that the buffoon Donald Trump was right. Or was he? It doesn’t matter. I still trust these outlets, I believe that they have and will continue to do good work and they aren’t ‘fake’ news but it doesn’t matter. They got this one wrong and now the President and all his cronies (FOX News, Breitbart, The National Inquirer) will start to pile on and public perception, as we’ve seen, is everything. The perception shoe is now on the other foot when it comes to Donald Trump.
Instead of focusing on his other faults and outrages, which are numerous, all the chips were on Russia which was a bust. Tunnel vision. How many times was a ‘Russia’ story the lead on CNN when there was some other injustice in America at the hands of Donald Trump? In reality the crusade to take down Donald Trump backfired. Can you believe that impeachment was a real discussion in the media as recently as last week? It was almost assumed that Mueller’s report would condemn the President and now that there isn’t a shred or scrap of condemnation to be found, Democrats are left with their cheese in the wind.
“No collusion” just paved the way for a second Donald Trump term. Have a seat Joe Biden better sit this one out.
